Parkin Architects Limited is an employee-owned, award-winning, architectural practice firm with a proven track record in practical, innovative and economical design. During a history spanning some 60 years, Parkin has designed some of Canada’s most notable buildings.

We are currently seeking a motivated and curious Co-Op Student for a unique, on-site placement at the Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project in Duncan, BC. This landmark project is British Columbia’s first all-electric hospital and a first-of-its-kind sustainable healthcare facility delivered under an Alliance model.

This role offers a rare, hands-on opportunity to be embedded directly on an active construction site, working at the intersection of design, construction, and clinical planning in a highly collaborative environment. For students interested in Contract Administration, healthcare design, and real-world project delivery, this is a one-of-a-kind experience at Parkin.

About the Role

As part of the on-site team on Vancouver Island, you will work closely with architects, consultants, contractors, and client representatives, gaining firsthand exposure to how complex healthcare projects are delivered from design through construction.

You will act as a key connection between the on-site project team and Parkin’s Vancouver-based architecture team, contributing to coordination, communication, and problem-solving across disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Support on-site architectural and project teams in translating design intent into built form
  • Participate in site walks, inspections, coordination meetings, and day-to-day construction activities
  • Assist with contract administration tasks and on-site issue resolution
  • Act as a liaison between the Cowichan site team and Parkin’s Vancouver office
  • Gain exposure to a true Alliance delivery model, where teams collaborate openly and make “best-for-project” decisions
  • Learn about healthcare design in practice, including patient safety, infection control, durability, and clinical workflows
  • Stay connected to design through design development discussions and committee inpu
  • Build confidence in professional communication, coordination, and teamwork

Software Knowledge

Experience with the following software is considered an asset:

  • Revit
  • AutoCAD
  • SketchUp
  • Grasshopper
  • Dynamo
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
